Map Guide and Help

Estimated reading: 2 minutes 34 views

The GhostViewer Map helps you explore old photos by place, date, and creation status, then jump straight into the GhostViewer app to make your own overlays and GIFs.

1) What the map is for

Use the map to:

  • find historic photos in places you know
  • browse by location and time period
  • identify photos that already have GhostViewer creations
  • find photos that still need a modern recreation

2) How to use the filters

Use the filter bar at the top of the page to narrow results:

  • Country: broad regional starting point
  • County/Region: narrower geographic area
  • City/Borough: local place-level filtering
  • Precision:
    • Close (green) = nearest/most exact
    • Town/City (blue) = approximate town-level
    • County (yellow) = broader area
  • Date range: filter by approximate historic date
  • GhostViewer Creations:
    • With creation GIF
    • Without creation GIF
    • All

Use Filter to apply and Reset to clear all filters.

3) Using “Use my location”

Tap Use my location to center results near your current position (browser/device permission required).
Helpful when exploring nearby places to recreate.

4) Understanding pins and legend

Map pins show location precision and creation status:

  • color indicates precision (Close / Town-City / County)
  • pins with linked GhostViewer creations are visually highlighted
  • clusters group nearby photos at lower zoom levels

Zoom in to split clusters and view individual pins/cards.

5) How to use the cards

Each map card shows key information, including:

  • title
  • Photo ID
  • approximate date
  • location text
  • attribution/source

Card actions:

  • See on map: centers the selected pin
  • Open in GhostViewer: opens the app with that old photo
  • View GIF & details (when available): opens linked creation info

6) Suggested workflow

  1. Filter to your area (country/county/city).
  2. Set creation filter to Without creation GIF to find opportunities.
  3. Open a card and review attribution/date/location notes.
  4. Click Open in GhostViewer to create your modern match.
  5. Return later to explore results with With creation GIF.

7) Tips for best results

  • Start broad, then narrow with filters.
  • If nearby points overlap, zoom in and use map/card together.
  • Check attribution before publishing any output.
  • Use Photo ID when tracking specific records.

8) Troubleshooting

  • No results: broaden filters (especially city/date/precision).
  • Location seems broad: check precision and location notes on card.
  • Can’t use “Use my location”: allow browser location permission and reload.
