Taken in September 1968, this photo shows the Carfax Tower from High Street. The Tower is all that remains of the 13th Century St Martin's Parish Church and is now owned by Oxford City Council. Originally, it was the City Church of Oxford until 1896 when it was moved to All Saints Church in High Street. The tower is 75 feet tall and no building in Oxford could be constructed higher than it. It is now open to the public all the year round. To the left of the tower is Queen Street where a bus operated by City of Oxford Motor Services Ltd can just be seen. On the right of the photo is the Midland Bank building, which is now occupied by its successor, HSBC.
